A few days ago, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . They made a point I've been thinking about. Would you rather buy a newer super car, or spend the same on an older super car? Example: the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Both cost $325,000, made by Ferrari, and are open topped. The 458 obviously has much more performance, but will depreciate hundreds of dollars for every mile you drive it. The Dino has less performance, but will likely appreciate. What is your choice?

The Dino because you used the Spider in this comparison. I'd rather the 458 coupe.

I'd have a garage full of cars that are much cooler than either of those.

The only cars I'd spend 500k+ on (or even 100k+) are the Ford RS200, McLaren F1, and *maybe* the 959

Better off just spending 20k on a Mondial :)

458 'cause if I'm spending $300k+ I'm getting what I want.

And don't tell me I'm wrong.

The image shows a GT. I've always like GT/B Ferraris better than their GTS counterparts.

but the Dino wasn't a supercar :((((((

I'd take it over the 458 any day though.

When I'm spending $100k+ on a car, I get what I want. Whether it depreciates or appreciates doesn't matter. (But appreciation would be nice). That said I'd probably take the Dino because I love how they look, and something about driving a classic is enjoyable. Oh ya, and Justin Bieber owns a 458.

So you'd have a 458 coupe over the Dino?

It'd still be pretty close. The Dino is much more of an event to drive and experience, while the 458 is ultimate speed.

Though with the 458 replacement coming soon, I think I'd be leaning towards the Dino.

Kinja'd!!!1

Easy. In 20 years from now, the 458 is going to be worth…..erm i think about $75k while that dino would have appreciated to over $10mil status. Just watch the Barrett Jackson auctions 20 years from now and you'll see

Newer. Reason: I want to drive it. I want to drive the piss out of it. Track days, autox, to the grocery, in a canyon. To buy an old car because it will hold it's value you take a risk every time you drive it, and it still depreciates for every mile you put on it.

I'm leaning towards old classic but I'd be so nervous about something happening to it, unfortunately I don't have the opportunity to worry about that.

booooooooooooooooo :(

Cars are meant to be driven, even "classics"

I fucking HATE those stupid collectors that keep their cars in heated garages all the time and never drive them. Sorry, but buying a car to hold its value is silly and definitely the wrong reason for buying a car, imo.

If you want to drive a car without worrying about its value, buy a Civic or Fit. No really, they just don't seem to depreciate that much at all! Even 5-yo Fits and Civics still command more than 10k!

I think about this ALL DAY LONG.

There are other related choices to make too.

Even if you didn't want to go Dino because prices have already gone up SO much in relation to performance you could get a Ferrari from the 80s or 90s that is just now starting to appreciate for less than a 458. You can get a 512 TR for under $100K and still have a mid engine Ferrari with a decent amount of power. Or a 6MT F430 for $125K that won't depreciate much and might start appreciating in about 5-10 years if you hold it long term.

It's mind numbing how many choices there are. I definitely want a mid engine Ferrari. I'm glad I can't afford it yet because deciding which one to get is so damn hard.

It would be pretty damn sick to have a 458 regardless of the depreciation. It might be the last N/A V8 Ferrari. Lots of rumors going around that the replacement will have a modified version of the V8 from the California T.

I saw one for sale recently.

Haha I doubt the Dino will ever be worth $10M. I think its appreciation curve will flatten out soon. It's too common to ever become a $10M car.

You haven't lived until you drive a Ferrari spider with the top down on a warm summer night.

Well i wouldn't be too sure. Was it just 30 years ago, you could get a Ferrari 250 if i'm correct for under $4k? I'd like to see you buy one for $400k now. Impossible. No even $4mil would get you close and that was a car that wasn't even that famous when it came out. I maybe getting the wrong Ferrari here but i'll look it up and show you. Don't underestimate how much these dino's can appreciate and they're dwindling in numbers so the rarity factor continues to grow

In 1984 the 250 GTO was a few hundred grand (per Wikipedia). It was a hell of a deal in the early 70s.

But there is a key difference between the GTO and the Dino - only about 40 GTOs were made.

I'm not saying the Dino will stop appreciating. I just don't think it will ever hit the stratosphere like the GTO did. There are still a big number of them out there and the people that buy them for $400K will take good care of them.

Yeah thank you for that. It was the 250 GTO. I think about forty were made but only 35 were sold to the public. Okay you win but i won't go down that easily. Alright, in 40 years, dino's are gonna be worth waaay more than $10mil. Assume inflation, rarity and all other factors and these cars would be worth way more than that. Even the Ferrari 360 and 430 in 40 years from now would probably be in the millions range. Amen for gated shifters; while google cars destroy the rest of the world.

The Dino. It's simply better looking and it's not subject to incredibly complicated and obscenely expensive electronics failing...it's more of a pure sports car to me

New. I feel like I would have to restrain myself with a old super car because I would want to preserve the car. There would be no such worries with a new car.

Haha if inflation gets that bad then we're all SCREWED! Unless we happen to own Dinos. We better start stockpiling gold and Dinos and real estate because the dollar will be useless.

The funny thing is that the Fed is more worried about deflation than inflation right now. Macro economics are so damn complicated...

We definitely need to get cars with gated shifters before Google cars destroy the world! I'm trying to save up for one now. It's so damn hard. It's smarter to buy an older car like a 348, F355 or 360 to save money. But I want the F430 because it's so much quicker. But the damn F430 isn't depreciating fast enough. I've been tracking prices for years and they may have already bottomed out. Ferrari raised the prices when they launched the 458 and that might be helping support used F430 prices.
